Andrea Poorter
Senior Coach
I am 30 years old. I was born in Cape Town, grew up in Johannesburg but lived in the UK for much of my early life. I completed Matric at Kingsmead in Johannesburg.
I have always been a keen swimmer – I started lessons at a year old and was swimming within six months. I loved splashing in the water as a child, whether it be the bath, a pool, or the sea!
Throughout my school career, swimming was my main sport. I was always in the team and especially enjoyed the relays with my teammates. I swam for a well-known swimming club in the UK which exposed me to many swimming galas across Surrey. Our junior school team won the mixed-style relay in the National Schools Championships – I was the freestyle swimmer.
I part completed a BA in psychology but decided that I wanted to be on the ground and out of the office. I found swimming coaching to be an ideal career as it combines an essential skill with discipline, tenacity, and other life skills.
I love children, and to supplement my income I have au-paired for many families and regard myself very good with children. I look forward to gaining my students’ confidence and developing them as confident and competent swimmers.
I have a current First Aid certificate I originally qualified as a PADI swimming Instructor and later as a specialist Baby Swimming teacher

I do not use or endorse "Drown Proofing" methods.
I do not morally agree with the technique of drown proofing and it is the polar opposite of my methodology. Drown proofing is a conditioning technique that is both dramatic and traumatic for a child which is totally unnecessary in teaching water safety skills.
We are passionate about teaching babies to swim and water safety skills within a safe, happy and child focused environment.
